Summary of Contents: This is a brief commentary on the Quran, initially written in 871 AH by Jalāl al-Dīn Maḥallī Shāfiʿī, covering the surah of Baqarah up to the surah of Asrāʾ. After him, due to the enthusiasm shown by people interested in it, Jalāl al-Dīn Suyūṭī completed and supplemented it following the same style, and added a commentary on the surah of Ḥamd.

Hand(s)

Graceful and cursive Naskh, several hands, normal size The copy begins in a graceful Naskh script, but its neatness diminishes as we proceed towards the end of the copy. The handwriting is of very low quality towards the end. The date of copying written at the end is damaged.

Decoration

Rubricated titles; Quranic verses in cinnabar; incipit has a gilt frontispiece; one-line decorative frame.

Additions: There are two ownership notes on the initial folio, of whcih one is wiped out. On f. 1a: قد تشرفت بهذا التفسیر الجلالی مشحونا بالدرر… و لا تنظروا الی رواءه خطه و کاتبه فی اشد العذاب مع سارق الکلام الملک الوهاب… الحاج میرزا محمد علی ابن المبرور الشهید الحاج میرزا بابا ابن محمد خان ابن اسمعیل خان فسایی… کنت متوطنا و متولدا فی قصبه اصطهبانات. حرره فی ۱۹ شهر ج ۲ سنه احدی و ثلثمائه بعد الالف ; on f. 376b: a note on ownership transfer; on the first final end leaf: prayers.

Maroon leather, 14.5 × 21.5 cm, front + back cover, leather + pasteboard

Gilt tooling (a medallion, two finials, and rectangular corner-pieces)

Condition

The cover and its decorations are damaged.

History

Origin: Unknown place of origin; 11th century AH; 17th century CE The second digit in the origin year is wiped out (hence, 1[...]68), but it appears to be ‘0’, in which case the origin year will be 1068 AH/1658.
