Folios 1b-2a: double full-page illumination with the first seven words of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and the beginning of Sūrat al-Baqarah.
Text is encased in a gilded frame throughout the manuscript.
Illuminated headings at the beginning of each sūrah most often containing simply the basmallah.
Illuminated circular verse markers at the end of each verse (ayah), and larger more elaborate juz markers in the margins in gold, red and blue.
Folio 152b: full-page illumination with the colophon in the middle in a circular medallion.
Additions:Binding
Smooth old Turkey morocco binding with a flap, profusely gilt and wrapped in a leather case. Pastedowns and the outermost flyleaves are of orange-tinted paper flecked with silver.
History
Origin: It was produced probably in the 18th century CEProvenance and Acquisition
Formerly part of the collection of the Persian scholar Nathaniel Bland (1803-1865).
Bland’s oriental manuscripts were sold through Bernard Quaritch in 1866 to Alexander Lindsay, 25th Earl of Crawford.
Purchased by Enriqueta Rylands in 1901 from James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford, for the John Rylands Library.
Bequeathed by Enriqueta Rylands (1843–1908) in 1908 to John Rylands Library.
