Summary of Contents: A work on various vices affecting human life, by an unknown author. It was copied in the 18th century and according to Mingana, it seems to be of Spanish origin.

The work, although beginning with the usual Islamic Basmalah, is probably of Christian origin.

It consists of thirteen chapters treating of various vices affecting human life, and there is not in them any suggestion of authorship.

Title on folio 1a: كتاب الطب الروحاني .

Beginning (folio 1b): بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم. كتاب الطب الروحاني. الفصل الاول في دفع الغضب والحقد ان الغضب جعل في الحيوان ليكون لهابه انتقام من الموذى وهذا العارض اذا ارفط جاوز حده جتى يفسد معه العقل; ending (folios 114a-114b): فانا خاتمون كلامنا بالشكر لربنا عز وجل فالحمد له واهب كل نعمه وكاشف كل غمه حمدا بلا نهاية كما هو اهله ومستحقه. كمل كتاب الطب الروحاني بعون الله.

History

Origin: The manuscript was produced probably in the 18th century CE. According to Mingana, it seems to be of Spanish origin.

Provenance and Acquisition

Formerly part of the collections of Samuel Hawtayne Lewin (1795–1840), one of the Six Clerks of the Court of Chancery. Lewin was also Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society (1829-1840); see note in pencil on front paste-down: S.H.L. 1824 1/6.

Formerly part of the collection of the Persian scholar Nathaniel Bland (1803-1865). See label on back paste-down: Bland No. 179.

Bland’s oriental manuscripts were sold through Bernard Quaritch in 1866 to Alexander Lindsay, 25th Earl of Crawford; his bookplate on the back paste-down: Bibliotheca Lindesiana 3/K.

Purchased by Enriqueta Rylands (1843–1908) Rylands, Enriqueta, 1843–1908 in 1901 from James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford (1847–1913) Crawford, James Ludovic Lindsay, Earl of, 1847–1913 .

Bequeathed by Enriqueta Rylands (1843–1908) in 1908 to John Rylands Library.
