Summary of Contents: Glosses on ʻAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar Bayḍāwī's Qurʿān commentary entitled Anwār al-tanzīl on Sūrah Nūr (Sūrah 14) by Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad Khafājī. The marginal notes in black are certainly by Khafājī himself, and the manuscript itself may be an autograph of Khafājī (Mingana). Written around 1640.

Author: Khafājī, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad 1571 or 1572-1659 الخفاجي، احمد بن محمد

Bayḍāwī's text is introduced by قوله in red.

Khafājī's name does not occur in the text itself but it is taken from the two following notes: a) three rhymed lines are added at the end on folio 74a, with the final note: نجز على يد مولفه احمد شهاب الدين ابن محمد المصرى غفر الله ذنوبه; b) an inscription in Turkish is written on front flyleaf (after Khafājī's death) to the following effect: بو حاشيـهٔ شهابك اخرينده شهاب مر حومك خط لطيفلرى واردر. From these notes it is to be inferred that the manuscript is also an autograph of Khafājī.

The work is dedicated in the preface to the Shaikh ul-Islām يحيى بن زكرياء

Fine Turkish binding of the 17th century.

Inscription on the head: شهاب على البيضاوى.

Origin: Produced around 1640 CE.

Provenance and Acquisition

Folio 1a: purchase note about a certain Sulaimān buying the book on 14th Shaʿbān 1192 AH (1778 CE) for seven and a half piastres.

Seals, badly stamped and smudged, on folios 1b, 2a, and 74a.
