According to the short prose dībāchah, the work was completed at Benares (Varanasi) on 10 Z̲ū al-ḥijjah 1211 / 1797, and written at the request of Mr Alexander Duncan (Mistar Alig Zandar Dankayn Ṣāḥib Muẓaffar Jang), the nāẓim or governor of Benares
