Letters, miscellaneous

Contents

Fragment of a larger untitled collection of official letters and historical extracts, misidentified on the title page (according to William Irvine's notes) as Vazīr'nāmah

The present manuscript consists of only 2 compositions:

1) Extract from a history (possibly the Jangnāmah-yi Āṣafī) relating to political affairs in early-nineteenth-century Aṣafjāhī Hyderabad, mentioning Muḥammad ʿAlī Khān and the murder of his appointed successor, Muḥammad ʿAlī, at the hands of his younger brother, Ghulām Muḥammad, and the subsequent involvement of European forces (fawj-i ṣaḥibān-i Firang)

2) Fragment of a shuqqah of Navvāb Saʿādat ʿAlī Khān Bahādur to an unnamed addressee, relating 150 years of good relations, confirming the removal of Vazīr ʿAlī Khān to Benares, and the role played by the Honourable EIC (Kampanī Bahādur). The text ends abruptly.

Defective at end

There is a colophon at the end of the first composition: Jangnāmah-yi Āṣafī, the whole [manuscript] defective, [written by] Mūl Chand valad-i Munshīʾ Bakht/Bachan (?) Singh Lakhnavī... 15 Rajab 12[0]9 Hijrī, at the station (maqāmāt) of Kīratpūr (Bijnor District, UP) in the environs of Najībābād; written at the request of Bābū Mahīs (Mahesh)
