Muhammad 'Abdullah al-Hakim's al-Mujarrabat al-shafiyyah

Contents

1 copy of al-Mujarrabāt al-shāfīyah by Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥakīm

A treatise on medical remedies, by Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥakīm. For this author, who flourished in the first half of the 11th/17th century and also composed Muʿālajāt-i Dārāshukūhī, see Storey, PL II/2 E, p. 258), where two other manuscripts are cited. No copies are mentioned by Munzavī or Fonahn. The text is Persian, but there are occasional passages – at the end of the work, for example – in Arabic.

An inscription on f. 1r gives the author’s name as Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Ḥakīm al-Mulhīrī al-Sūratī (of Surat); this is followed by the formula dām fayz̤uh, which implies that he was alive at the time of copying. Notes in the margin mainly indicate the topic under discussion, although a number of folios are copiously annotated.

Begins: ‘Basmalah... al-Ḥamd li-Allāh al-Shāfī al-asqām va al-Ḥakīm al-Kāfī al-ālām al-Mufīd fī al-javāhir (?) al-aʿrāẓ va l-ās̲ār al-khavazz... Ammā baʿd fa-yaqūl al-mutafir (= al-muftaqir?) ilà shifāʾ al-Karīm Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥakīm. Lammā tavajjaht ilà shaṭr Kaʿbat al-Karīm... ’

Ends: ‘va marārat al-s̲awr va al-zift va al-ḥuliyyah va al-qiṭrān ʿalà ḥajarihā (= tahrīban?)... Tard sam abras... al-Zaʿfarān iz̲ā juʿil fī al-bayt harabat minh... Tamm’

Other contents: f. 1r, ownership inscription dated 1150/1738; also verses, and narrations from Companions of the Prophet, also in Arabic.

Undated: probably late 11th/17th or early 12th/18th century.

Elegant nastaʿlīq. 21 lines. Headings, quotations and overlinings in red. Folio 35 is misplaced between f. 37 and 38. Thin to medium beige Indian paper, slightly brittle; faint water staining at the edge of some margins throughout. Folio 10 has two holes and several smudges, and part of the text is lost. 40 folios. 225 x 130 mm.; text area 165 x 78 mm. Boards covered with brown leather, very worn.
