Oriental Manuscripts

Contents

Summary of Contents: A largely prose translation by a translator who gives his name only as مسعود Mas‘ūd into heavily Oghuz-influenced Pre-Classical Chaghatay of نصر الله منشی Naṣr Allāh Munshī's Persian translation of کلیله و دمنه Kalīlah wa Dimnah, itself based on the Arabic translation (from either a Pahlavi or Sanskrit version) of ابن المقفع Ibn al-Muqaffa‘.
Language(s): A version of Pre-Classical Chaghatay or Khwarezmian Turkic with heavy influence from Oghuz Turkic (or vice-versa), known contemporarily and in scholarship as the "olga-bolga" language. It is written in the highly "laconic" implementation of the Arabic script, which relies heavily on obligatory diacritic markings to indicate vowels as opposed to the matres lectionis common in many Turkic texts from the same era.

Per the colophon, the Turkic translation was originally prepared under the order of Aydınoğlu Gazi Umur Paşa, 1309-1348, the Beg of Aydın.
