A Turkish translation of ʿAlī Ḳuşcı's (died AH 879 AD 1474/1475) famous astronomical treatise, رساله در علم هيئة or رسالة في الهيئة (see Nos. 1543-1538 in this Cat.), made AH 956=AD 1549 at the request of the great astronomer Mevlānā Ḥamdüllāh bin Şeyḫ Cemālüddīn (in Rieu: Ḥamdüllāh bin Şeyḫ Celālüddīn bin Şeyḫ Cemālüddīn, who died AH 967 AD 1560, see here fol. 2b, ln. 16 sq.), in the reign of Sulṭān Süleymān I, whose eulogium is found here on fol. 2, ln. 2 sq., by Seyyid or Seyyidī ʿAlī bin Ḥüseyn of Galata, called Kātib-i Rūmī, with the taḫalluṣ Kātibī, see fol. 2a, ln. 6 ab infra, and comp. Rieu, p. 120 sq.; W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 189; G. Flügel ii. p. 428; Hammer, Osman. Dichtkunst, ii. p. 306; Schefer, Chrestom. Persane, ii. p. 220 sq. As Diez, Denkwürdigkeiten, ii. p. 41, and Rieu, loc. cit., have proved, this work is a translation of ʿAlī Ḳuşcı's Persian treatise, quoted above, not of the same author's fuller Arabic treatise on the same subject, styled فتحیة AH Khalfa seems to assume (iii. p. 458 and iv. p. 379). Seyyidī ʿAlī bin Ḥüseyn is besides the author of مرآة الممالك, a description of his extensive travels in AH 961-964=AD 1554-1557, see W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 214 (translated by Diez, Denkwürdigkeiten, ii. pp. 133-267, and Morris in Journal Asiatique, ix. pp. 27-209, and x. pp. 46-112; comp. also Ḥ. Khalfa, Maritime Wars of the Turks, pp. 72-77); of the محیط, a special description of the Indian Ocean, see G. Flügel ii. p. 429; of the مرآة الکائنات, on the sinuated quadrant and the Astrolabe (في ربع المجيب), in five maḳāles, see H. Khalfa v. p. 485, No. 11739; of the رسالهٔ هیئه, another astronomical treatise (see the immediately following copy); and of a Turkish dīvān (دیوان کاتبی), see H. Khalfa iii. p. 302, No. 5624, and col. 1214, ln. 28-31 above. He died the 2nd of Cemāẕī el-evvel, AH 970=AD 1562, Dec. 28. The present treatise, the title of which appears here on fol. 3a, ln. 12, is divided into a muḳaddime and two maḳāles, the contents of which are described in detail in Rieu, loc. cit. Beginning: سپاس بی قیاس و ستایش بی مقیاس اول حکیم با حکمت و علیم پر موهبت بی علت الخ. Muḳaddime, on the principles of geometry and physics, in two ḳısms, on ff. 3a and 5o. Maḳāle I, on the heavenly bodies (اجرام علویه), on fol. 5b, in six bābs. Maḳāle II, on the terrestrial globe and the climates (هیئهٔ زمین واقلیم) on fol. 41b, in twelve babs (i, e. the eleven bābs of the Persian original and its ḫātime, which forms here the twelfth bāb, dealing with the distances and the sizes of the planets, here styled ابعاد واجرام, which is no doubt a mistake for ابعاد اجرام. Another Turkish version of ʿAlī Ḳuşcı's Persian treatise, by Mullā Parvīz (who died AH 987 =AD 1579/1580), entitled مرقات السما, the ladder to heaven, is noticed in W. Pertsch, p. 24. This copy is dated the 14th of Şaʿbān, AH 978 = AD 1571, Jan. 11, in the township (قصبه) of Ebū Eyūb el-Enṣārī, by Aḥmed bin ʿAbdülkerīm el-Cendī; it was transcribed from a manuscript, copied directly from the author's autograph.

An original treatise on astronomy by the same Seyyidi ʿAlī bin Ḥüseyn, here called Seyyid ʿAlī Çelebī ar-Rūmī, and beginning: ربّ يسر ولا تعسّر ربّ تمّم بالخير اما بعد بو رساله شول حوادث جزویة بیان ایدر كه فلك قمرك تحتنده تقدير الهى و تأثیر سماوی ایله عالم عناصرده مكمن غیبدن بلا ريب ظهور ایدر الخ. It is divided into a temhīd, four aṣls, and a ḫātime. Tamhīd, on fol. 78b, in two muḳaddimes, the first: جسمڭ ماهیتن و آنگ اقسامن بیان ایدر; the second: عناصرك بعضنا بعضنه انقلابن بیان ایدر. Aṣl I, on fol. 80b: بخاری و هواده آندن حاصل اولانی بیان ایدر (variant reading in margin بخاری و آنده حاصل اولانی بیان ایدر). Aṣl II, on fol. 82a: دخانی و هواده آندن حاصل اولانی بیان ایدر (marginal reading: دخان و هوادن حاصل اولانى بیان ایدر). Aṣl III, on fol. 84b: بادی و آنگ حصولنگ کیفیتی بیان ایدر (marginal reading: باد حصولك کیفیتی بیان ایدر). Aṣl IV, on fol. 84b: قوس قزحی و هاله بیان ایدر. The ḫātime is not found, unless there be a lacuna, which is difficult to detect, as catchwords are wanting in the last pages; on the other hand, there appear three short muḳaddimes again on fol 87b, a ثالثة ثانية, and رابعه. Copied by the same transcriber as the preceding treatise.
