The consolation of spirits, a poem on medical science, in mes̠nevī-beyts, by Muḥammed bin Aḥmed el-Ülveynī et-Tevnisī (see H. Khalfa ii. p. 286, No. 2954), compiled or at least commenced, according to fol. 2a, ln. 4 (یکرمی دورت بیڭ یلده که کیدر), AH 1024 AD 1615, and dedicated to Sulṭān Aḥmed I (who reigned AH 1012-1026=AD 1603-1617). Unfortunately this copy is very defective, and the order of leaves is moreover in such a hopeless confusion, that it is almost impossible to find out how much of the whole work is missing. According to H. Khalfa it was divided into four canons (قوانین), and traces of such a division are found throughout. Ff. 25-46 contain the last part of the third ḳānūn from the middle of the sixth maḳāle to the end of the twenty-third or last. On fol. 46a the fourth ḳānūn begins (فی العلاج), divided into two babs, the first of which (فی قوانین علاج) is subdivided into three maḳāles, on ff. 46, 176a, and 176b; with the end of this bāb ends the first volume (المجلد الاول). The beginning of the manuscript is found on fol. 2a (with perhaps one leaf of the introduction missing) and opens abruptly thus: بو عالم کم کتورد آنی وجوده آڭا دوردی رکوعیله سجوده. The praise of the prophet begins on fol. 3a, and on the same page the dedication to the Sulṭān is found. On fol. 4a a first fenn begins (probably identical with the first ḳānūn of H. Khalfa), comprising the theoretical part (في الجزء النظري) in seven bābs; first bāb (فی الامور الطبیعیة), on fol. 4b, in seven maḳāles; second bab (فی تشریح الابدان), on fol. 13, also in seven maḳāles; if this statement is right, the second bāb is incomplete, as there are found here three maḳāles only; but the catchwords are correct throughout and it is not unlikely, that the transcriber made a mistake, in writing 7 instead of 3; third bab (فی ذکر الامور الستة الضروریة), on fol. 22a, in six maḳāles, on ff. 22a, 23b (where there seems to be a lacuna between ff. 22 and 23), 77a (two maḳāles), 77b, and 78a; fourth bab (فی الامراض), on fol. 78b, in three maḳāles; fifth bab (فی الاسباب), on fol. 80a, in thirteen maḳāles; sixth bab (فی معرفة الدلایل), on fol. 85, in seven maḳāles; the seventh bāb (فی العلامت المنذرة), on fol. 97b, in several maḳāles. On fol. 109b, a second fenn begins (probably the second ḳānūn of H. Khalfa), comprising the practical part (في الجزء العملي) and containing a preamble (مفتح) and two bābs: first bab (فی حفظ الصحة), on fol. 112b, in eleven maḳāles; second bab (في رد الصحة وبر العلة) in two ḳānūns, the second of which, on fol. 129a, is arranged alphabetically, but breaks off in the faṣl of nūn (ن), on fol. 175b. The proper order of leaves therefore is: ff. 2-21 (lacuna), 22 (lacuna), 23, 24, 77-175, 25-47, 176, 177, 1, 48-55, 66, 56-65, 67-76, 178-326, and the real contents of this copy can be summed up in this way: FIRST VOLUME OR MÜCELLED: ḳānūn (or fenn) I, defective at the beginning and in the middle, on ff. 2-24 and 77-109. ḳānūn (or fenn) II, incomplete at the end, on ff. 109b-175b. ḳānūn III, defective at the beginning, on ff. 25a-46a. ḳānūn IV, first bab, complete, on ff. 46a-47b and 176a-177b.
