Summary of Contents: A very beautiful old thirteenth century manuscript of another portion of the Dhakhira-i-Khwárazmsháhí, beginning with Book III, Bakhsh i, Maqála iv, and extending to the end of Book v. It begins with a table of contents of the 18 chapters into which this Maqála, dealing with wine, its uses, abuses, and effects, is divided. The chief contents of the volume are as follows: Book , Bakhsh i, Magala (or Guftár) is, on Wine (18 chapters, ff. 1-10); Magala v, on Sleeping and Waking (5 chapters, ff. 10-12); Magala vi, on Exercise and Rest (6 chapters, of which ch. 4 is omitted, ff. 12-10); Mayala vii, on Clothing and the use of Oils and Scents (4 chapters, ff. 16-20). BOOK III, Bakhsh ii, Maqála i, in 5 parts (Juz), dealing with Phlebotomy, Emesis, Purgation, Diuretics, Diaphoretics, Enemata, etc., ff. 20°-90°; Maqála ii, on Health and Disease (4 chapters, ff. 90-94"); Maqála iii, on the Effects of Mental States on Health (6 chapters, ff. 94-96); Maqála iv, on Abnormal Conditions in Different Regions of the Body indicative of Impending Illness (4 chapters, ff. 96-98); Maqála v, on the Care of Children (8 chapters, ff. 98-102); Maqála vi, on the Care of the Aged (5 chapters, ff. 102-104); Maqála vii, on Precautions to be observed by Travellers (7 chapters, ff. 104-106). On f. 106 is the following colophon enclosed in a coloured and ornamented circle: تمام شد کتاب سومین از ذخیره خوارزمشاهی بيد العبد الضعيف الفقير المذنب المحتاج الى رحمة الله تبارك وتعالى على بن محمد بن عبد الله النساخ الشبابي الشيرازي غفر الله له ولوالديه ولجميع المومنين والمومنات BOOK IV, Guflár i, on Diagnosis (3 chapters, ff. 107-109); Guflár ii, on Coction (5 chapters, ff. 109-111); Guftár iii, on Crises (10 chapters, ff. 111-126); Guftar iv, on Prognosis (7 chapters, f. 126-143"). Book v begins on f. 144" with a fresh title-page, treats of Fevers, and comprises six Guftárs, with many subdivisions of which a full table of contents occupies ff. 144-146. Guftár i, on Fever, its genera, species, signs and treatment (4 chapters, ff. 146-149); Guftár ii, on Quotidian Fever (27 chapters, ff. 149'-162"); Guftár iii, on Putrid Fevers, in 3 Parts (Jus') containing respectively 5, 10 and 12 chapters, ff. 162-206; Guftár iv, on Phthisis and Wasting Fevers (4 chapters, ff. 206-214"); Guftár v, on Smallpox and Measles (13 chapters, ff. 215-223); Guftár vi, on Relapse (5 chapters, ff. 223-225). There is a new title-page on f. 226" indicating the conclusion of Book v and the beginning of Book VI, on Special Diseases a capite ad calcem: تمام شد كتاب بنجم از ذخیره خوارزمشاهی بحمد الله ومنه و بعد ازین کتاب ششم آغاز کنیم اندر علاج بیماریها از سر تا پای F. 226 contains part of the table of contents of Book VI. This precious and beautiful old MS. comprises 226 ff. of 29'3 x 184 c. and 27 ll., and is most carefully written throughout in a large, clear, excellent, archaic naskh, with numerous headings, titles and sub-titles in red, blue and gold. A better specimen of a Persian MS. of this period is seldom seen.
