This manuscript contains only the first book of the Mas̱navī. William Jones notes this on f0v.

Form: codex
Support: Very thin and brittle brown woven paper which has been extensively repaired with other scraps of paper.
Extent: ff.iii+64+iii
Dimensions (leaf): 250 × 150 mm.
Dimensions (written): 200 × 100 mm.

European numerals in pencil. Perso-Arabic numerals in a mixture of pen and pencil.


Poor condition. Lots of damage.


17 half lines of poetry written around the margin.


Black ink nastaʿlīq script.



There are marginal comments throughout the manuscript in a range of different hands.


Standard India Office half leather binding with wine-coloured marbled endpapers.

Provenance and Acquisition

RSPA 1-118 were presented to the Royal Society in January 1792 by Sir William and Lady Jones. This manuscript was presented by Lady Jones.

The Royal Society's collection of 280 Persian and Arabic, and 86 Sanskrit manuscripts were transferred to the India Office Library in 1876.
