Summary of Contents: A very brief, anonymous text entitled Risālah-'i Aris̲māṭīqī (Treatise on Arithmetic), completed by an anonymous Mughal-era scribe on 3 Sha‘bān in the '18th year of Muḥammad Shāh's reign' (1150 AH, 15 Nov. 1737 CE) appears possibly excerpted from another unidentified work.
Incipit: (basmala) برگ ۱اپ (folio 1Ab): فن سیوم از جملهٔ چهارم که در علم ریاضی است در ارثماتیقی یعنی خواص اعداد و این چهار مقاله است.
Explicit: برگ ۲۳۳ر (folio 37a): و آخرین فن سیوم جملهٔ چهارم و بعد ازین شروع در فن چهارم کنیم که موسیقی یست.
Colophon: برگ ۲۳۳ر (folio 37a): تمام شد رساله ارثمابیقی بالخیر بتاریخ سیوم شعابان سنه ۱۸ محمد شاه بادشاه غازی.

Physical Description

Form: codex
Support: Textblock of cross-grained, istraw-coloured paper probably handmade in the Indian subcontinent with 8 laid lines per cm and no discernible chain lines.
Extent: 38 folios, 2 flyleaves (ff. ii + 38 + ii).
Dimensions (leaf): 210 × 133 mm.
Dimensions (written): 160 × 76 mm.
Foliation: Arabic numerals inconsistently pencilled on the upper-right corners of the initial and then every ten folios of the a sides, start on folio 1Aa, hence off by one. Foliation completed when catalogued.

Collation

Primarily quaternions throughout. 8IV3-4(31), 1II(35)1I(37). Catchwords throughout most of the lower-left corners of the b sides.

Condition

In fair condition, with moderate water and insect damage and historical repairs throughout.

Layout

Written in 1 column with 15 lines per page. Ruled with a misṭarah hand guide.

Hand(s)

Written in clear minuscule black nasta‘līq hand with shikastah ligatures and subheaders in naskh.

Additions:
Marginalia: notes written throughout, primarily in a single minuscule black nasta‘līq hand with shikastah ligatures.
Inscription:The first right flyleaf a side (f. ia) bears the title and name of former owner George William Hamilton, likely in the hand of his assistant Muhīn Dās.
Bookplates: The left pastedown: ‘Bibliotheca Lindesiana’ with pencilled shelfmark ‘1/J’, and ‘Hamilton MSS No. 621’.

Binding

Probably rebound in the Indian subcontinent for former owner George William Hamilton.

Sewn at two stations, unsupported. Endpapers of comparatively rough, heavily flocked, cross-grained stock added, then edges trimmed and endbands sewn at head and tail, both now missing. Boards hemmed in red goatskin leather along the edges and spine, faced with possibly Indian-made combed marbled paper, with defined joints, but neither with squares nor an envelope flap (Type III binding as per Déroche). Board interiors lined with spattered decorated papers, with the excess width adhered over the joints and onto the flyleaves to serve as hinges connecting the cover to the textblock.

211 × 38 × 9 mm.

Binding in fair condition. Some exterior abrasion, and endbands missing. Boxed.

History

Origin: Probably completed in the Indian subcontinent; 13 Sha‘bān, 18th year Muhammad Shah (1149 AH/17 Dec. 1736 CE).

Provenance and Acquisition

Subsequently acquired by Colonel George William Hamilton (1807-1868) who served in India from 1823 to 1867, latterly as Commissioner in Delhi. He acquired over a thousand Indian and Persian manuscripts, from which the British Museum selected 352, now held in the British Library.

Alexander Lindsay, 25th Earl of Crawford (1812–1880) purchased the remainder of Hamilton's collection in 1868.

Purchased by Enriqueta Rylands (1843–1908) in 1901 from James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford (1847–1913).

Bequeathed by Enriqueta Rylands (1843–1908) in 1908 to the John Rylands Library.
