Summary of Contents: On ritulas, prayers and conduct during the Ḥajj and ‘Umrah (pilgrimage). Consists of two texts, a guide concerning the procedure of the prayer (namāz-i fajr) نماز فجر, and extracts from Muḥammad Ṭaḥir Ghazzalī's treatise, Risālah dar bayān-i mazhab-i aḥl-i sunnat va jama‘āt رساله در بیان مذهب اهل سنت و جمعات by Mulla Muḥammad Bāqir ibn Muḥammad Taqī al-Mūsawī.After giving his name and relating the content of the treatise in the preface, the author states that he compiled this work when he was getting prepared for the pilgrimage f. 1v …مقصر درگاه ربالعلمین و خادم ائمة الطاهرين محمد باقر بن محمد تقي الموسوي بعرض برادران ديني ميرسايد كه اين رساله ايست در بيان آداب و اعمال حج در اوان عزم تشرف به بيت الله العظيم بسمت تحرير رسائده…مقصر درگاه ربالعلمین و خادم ائمة الطاهرين محمد باقر بن محمد تقي الموسوي بعرض برادران ديني ميرسايد كه اين رساله ايست در بيان آداب و اعمال حج در اوان عزم تشرف به بيت الله العظيم بسمت تحرير رسائده .There is no mention of a previous visit here, but the author refers, in the text, to his previous Hajj pilgrimage in AH 1231 (AD 1816) تقریبا ساعت (؟) به غوب مانده روز هفتم ذی الحجه الحرام سنه هزار و دویست وسی وسک وارد مکه معظمه … شدیم.تقریبا ساعت (؟) به غوب مانده روز هفتم ذی الحجه الحرام سنه هزار و دویست وسی وسک وارد مکه معظمه … شدیم. The work is composed of a muqaddamah مقدمه , four maqṣad مقصد and a khātamah خاتمه .The end of the last maqsad is marked with a date, AH 1249 سنه ۱۲۴۹ separating it from the next part, which seems to be khātamah, though it bears no heading. The main work is evidently an autograph.

History

Origin: 1249 AH

Provenance and Acquisition

From the collection of Colonel George William Hamilton (1807-1868) who served in India from 1823 to 1867 latterly as Commissioner in Delhi. He acquired over a thousand Indian and Persian manuscripts of which 352 were selected after his death for the British Museum. The remainder were purchased in 1868 by Alexander Lindsay, 25th Earl of Crawford.

Purchased by Enriqueta Rylands, on behalf of the John Rylands Library, in 1901 from James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford.
