Written in 1 to 3 columns with up to 17 lines per page. Ruled with a misṭarah hand guide.
Hand(s)
Written in clear black nasta‘līq with red subheaders by Makhan La‘l.
Inscriptions:
Bookplates: The left pastedown: ‘Bibliotheca Lindesiana’ bookplate with pencilled shelfmark ‘2/F’, and an earlier Lindesiana label ‘Persian MSS No. 29’, with the number crossed out and ‘823’ written aside.
Binding
Probably rebound in Britain for an unidentified former owner.
Resewn on three recessed cords laced into pasteboards. Edges trimmed, and woven cloth endbands adhered to head and tail Covered in full calfskin leather, tight-backed, over false bands.
Spine labels probably added for former owner Alexander Lindsay, 25th Earl of Crawford as the typeface conforms with others completed for him.
Handle binding with caution. In fair but stable condition, albeit extensively abraded on the spine and board edges, with cracked joints, and broken headcaps.
History
Provenance and Acquisition
While the circumstances under which this manuscript arrived in Britain remain unclear, London bookseller Bernard Quaritch (1819–1899) probably acquired from an unidentified source then sold it to Alexander Lindsay, 25th Earl of Crawford (1812–1880) in the 1860s, who then accessioned into the Bibliotheca Lindesiana at Haigh Hall, Wigan.
Purchased by Enriqueta Rylands (1843–1908) in 1901 from James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford (1847–1913).
Bequeathed by Enriqueta Rylands (1843–1908) in 1908 to the John Rylands Library, Manchester.
