E. G. Browne Collection
Contents
Summary of Contents: الاحكام العلائية This MS., from the Schindler collection, comprises 126 ff. of 16'6 × 12 c. and
from 17 to 19 ll. It presents many lacunae and dislocations, and appears to contain
portions of at least two separate Persian treatises on Astronomy or Astrology, one
entitled as above Al-Ahkámul-'Alá'iyya, ascribed on f. 1 to Fakhru'd-Dín ar-Rází,
and the other entitled in the colophon on f. 79 ar-Risalatu l-Mu'iniyya. Concerning the former, composed for 'Alá'u'd-Din Khwárazmsháh (d. 596/
1199) by Fakhru'd-Din ar-Rází (b. 543/1149, d. 606/1209), see Brockelmann's
Gesch. d. Arab. Litt., vol. 1, pp. 507-508. It begins, after the doxology: طاعت بعد از طاعت خدای تعالی و متابعت رسول علیم بهتر از خدمت پادشاه هیچ
... اما بعد
نیست كه أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول وأولى الأمر الخ and is in fact dedicated to 'Alá'u'd-Din Abu'l-Muzaffar Takin Khwárazmshah il-
Arslán ibn Atsiz Burhánu Amiri'l-Mu'minín. Amongst the authorities on whose
work it is based mention is made of Ptolemy, Abu'l-Ma'shar al-Balkhí, 'Umar ibn
Farrukhán (?) at-Tabari, Aḥmad ibn 'Abdi'l-Jalil as-Sijzí, Ya'qúb ibn 'Alí an-
Nasrání, Muhammad ibn Ayyúb at-Tabarí, Gúshyár, etc. The title occurs on f. 6º,
1. 2, and the work is divided into two Discourses (Maqála), the first (f. 6'), in nine
sections (fast) on General Principles (Kulliyyat), the second (f. 22") on Details
(Jusiyyat) or special applications, apparently in seventy sections. It is not clear where the acephalous Risalata'l-Mu'iniyya begins: the colophon with which it ends
occurs on f. 79 and runs as follows: تم استنساخ هذه الرسالة الموسومة بالمعينيّة فى النصف من شهر ربيع الأول سنة اربع وسبعين وستمائة الكاتب مودود بن ... الدستجردی This date, the middle of Rabí 1, 672, if correct, is equivalent to Oct. 1, 1273.
Owing to the absence of catch-words and the numerous lacunae and dislocations
in the manuscript, it is very doubtful whether it would be possible to arrange the
pages in their proper order, or to make any serious use of the MS.
