This section contains excerpts from the two earlier parts of Nawā'ī's Dēwān -- i.e. Badā'i‘u l-bidāya and Nawādiru l-nihāya -- plus at least two of the four works which comprise his later suite, Ḫazā'inu l-ma‘ānī: Nawādiru l-šabāb and Fawā'idu l-kibar. The only discernable excerpt from Nawādiru l-šabāb appears on a separate page (folio 252b) after 5 blank pages at the very end of this section, though in the same hand as most of the preceding text in the manuscript. The order of the ghazals in the poetic parts of this whole section is mixed, with some displaying bayts from different works combined into one. It ends abruptly (on folios 241b-249b) in the middle of a sentence of what is canonically considered the prose dēbāča to Badā'i‘u l-bidāya.

The last 5 lines of this section (folio 254a, lines 12-16) appear to be written later, certainly with a different pen and ink but possibly by the same hand.

This note seems to concern a debt of a certain Tuqun Āḫūndnïng oġlï Munīb توقون اخوندنینک اوغلی منیب and is witnessed by, inter alia, Ḥizbullāh Ḥājī حزب الله حاجی and Fāżil Āḫūnd فاضِل اخوند . A tamġa to the right, likely indicating the name of the authority who recorded the transaction, has yet to be examined in detail.

Collation

Folios 172 and 213-215 are bound upside down.

Layout

Two column of 13 lines on most pages. On some pages, text is written at an ascending angle; the text on these pages is read as two columns. Where the text is written straight across, it is read as one column across the two. Additionally, some pages are written in a diamond pattern, with two angled sides radiating off a central line. On these pages, it appears that the central line is to be read first, then the right side, then the left.

Hand(s)

( most folios ) Script: Nasta‘līq in black ink with red ink for some prose captions in item 1 and certain bayts and some minimal punctuation in item 2. Scribe unknown.

( folio 174a, col b ) Script: Dīwānī in black ink.

( folios 202a-b and 204b ) Script: Nasta‘līq in black ink.

Additions:

Prayers, notes, short poems, and an astrological chart scribbled on the first flyleaf, folio 1a, folios 255b-257b, and folio 261a-b await further analyis.

History

Origin: exact place of origin unknown, likely Kashgaria or Farghana; Rabī‘u l-awwal 1212 AH; between 24 August and 22 September 1797 CE. The pasted-in item 4 originates in ; Eastern Turkistan (likely Kashgaria) as evidenced by the word خطای "China" in the tamġa on the righthand side of the page;

Provenance and Acquisition

A note in Chaghatay on folio 1a labels it the property of one Aḥmadullāh Āḫūnd احمد الله اخوند.

A note in the margins of the diamond-shaped main text on folio 256b gives the name Mullā Brāhim ملا براهم [sic!], apparently a former owner.

A note in Persian on folio 257a labels the book as having belonged to one Jannat Bay Mufliḥ جنت بای مفلح and one ‘Aṭā'ullāh عطاء الله in sequence. The note appears to begin to list a third name, but it is incomplete.

A poorly written note in Chaghatay repeated several times in part and in whole on folio 261a labels the book as the property of one Mullā Tuquy Āḫūnd ملا توقوي اخوند.
